Course Mission Statement
“By using strengths as leverage, accommodations and modifications should provide a “just right” level of support that empowers a child to engage in class, instruction, and assessment in a meaningful way by supporting them around the needs I observe in my classroom.”
Making inclusion work for every student can be a challenge–but it doesn’t have to be. When given the proper selection of tools and special education professional development, any general or special educator can make inclusion not just work, but work successfully.
Think about it this way…
When a carpenter wants to get a job done, they grab for a tool–let’s say a hammer. But a carpenter can’t use a hammer for every job they need to do. They may need to cut, saw, measure… all of which don’t use a hammer! There’s a different tool for every job. It’s the same approach when it comes to tools for inclusion in the classroom. We can’t use the same few accommodations and modifications for all students to make inclusion work. We have to use the right accommodation or modification for each individual student.
Student engagement is the key….
When a child isn’t engaged, it means education isn’t working for them, and that’s when the problems start! Parents get worried, the child finds other uses for their time in class, and we end up at manifestation determination meetings when the child misbehaves. Sound about right?
In this asynchronous course, we explore what it takes to make inclusion work for every child with special needs. Rather than asking yourself questions like, “What can we do to help this student?” – you will walk away from the course armed with the knowledge to make the general education classroom work for all children.
