Why it matters:
Recognizing a learner’s behavior as a manifestation of an underlying academic, social/emotional, or behavioral barrier is crucial because it allows teachers to address the root cause. Responding to a behavior as the core of the problem will certainly not fix it and may actually exacerbate it. When a teacher understands that a student’s behavior stems from struggles in a specific area (a manifestation), they can respond appropriately by creating a permanent solution to the root cause, rather than a temporary response to the behavior. By identifying and addressing the root of the problem, the underlying academic, social/emotional, or behavioral barrier, the teacher can appropriately plan strategies to address the challenge, creating a more inclusive and supportive learning environment that ultimately helps the student overcome their challenges, improve their academic performance, and enhance their overall well-being. This approach fosters a positive teacher-student relationship and promotes long-term success for the learner.
